The Travelling Sint-Pietersberg
2021
After almost 100-year excavations of Limestone at the SintPietersberg, cement company ENCI closed its Maastricht factory in 2020. A part of the mountain body disappeared because of the surface mining carried out at Sint-Pietersberg in the past century. It revealed the unique geological composition of the mountain Saint Peter and formed an impressive landscape. However, the ecological damage caused by quarrying activities has become a big concern. Several parties are working together to transform the quarry back into a natural area.
Where did Sint-Pietersberg go? This project tries to find out the presence of buildings and infrastructures completed using cement produced by ENCI Maastricht, which used to be a part of the Sint-Pietersberg. De Oversteek, Oosterscheldekeringdek, Neeltje Jans Radar Tower, Student Hotel Eindhoven...these new landmarks appeared alongside the disappearing of Sint-Pietersberg. To commemorate this history, the author cast 1:500 scale models of these landmarks, with ENCI cement.
